IS THERE REALLY A NEED?
The City already has most of the proposed amenities that the City Council approved at various locations in the City except for a skate park which could be placed elsewhere.
Even though Malibu’s school age population is declining, because today's youth are so active in extracurricular sports activities, more facilities and playing fields are needed.
MOSA'S POSITION
An article in The Local Malibu, Issue 26, on the proposed development on the Bluffs states: “In the meantime, the City’s own demographic survey shows a population trend of the age group under 18 years old will continue to decline until at least 2025. One has to question if all the ball fields will be needed in the future.”
We support the City having baseball fields and other needed sports amenities but not at this one-of-a-kind environmentally sensitive and significant location.
There are other parcels in the City where these active recreation activities can take place.
CITY DEVELOPMENT OF BLUFFS OPEN SPACE PRESERVE IS APPEALABLE
The proposed development of the Malibu Bluffs Open Space Preserve can—and will—be appealed to the Coastal Commission under Coastal Act Section 30603.
